Implant Learning Center
Dental implants are a practical, durable and superior choice if you have missing teeth. If you are missing teeth but want a natural looking smile again, implants may be for you. You will be able to speak, smile and eat normally without worrying about false teeth falling out. Implants blend right in with your natural teeth and no one will know they are not your natural teeth.
- Because implants are custom-fabricated to match your remaining natural teeth, it will be almost impossible for anyone to notice you have had dental work done.
- By protecting the bone structure of the jaw, you will keep your youthful appearance.
- Dental implants can last you the rest of your life if cared for properly.
- The freedom to talk, smile, eat and laugh with confidence will be achieved. Because implants are permanently embedded into your jaw, you will not need to be concerned with false teeth coming out while you are in social settings.
Dental implants are used to replace teeth that are missing because of decay, an injury or any other reason. A three-step process is needed to complete an implant. The first step is having a titanium post embedded into the jaw and this will be the root for the replacement tooth. A healing time will take place allowing the bone structure to fuse to the post. The second step involves having an abutment attached to the embedded post. This abutment will be what the replacement tooth attaches to. For the third step the custom-fabricated replacement tooth is added to the abutment. This completed implant will function as your natural tooth and give you a beautiful smile again.
Dental implants are placed through a 3-step process. First, a titanium post is embedded directly into your jawbone and functions as a root for the replacement tooth. There will be a 3-6 month waiting period for the post to naturally fuse to the jawbone. Once fusion is complete, an abutment is attached to the embedded post in order to provide a foundation for the replacement tooth. Finally, the natural-looking prosthetic tooth is attached to the abutment. The result is a stunning smile that looks very natural.
When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Burt can detail the procedure and time-frame needed for restoring your beautiful and functional smile. In many cases, the entire procedure will take between six to eight months to complete. Research shows that patients that have received an implant say the wait is worth it and most people do not experience disruption to their life during this time. When the titanium post is first embedded into the jawbone, a period of time will be needed to allow the jawbone to fuse with the post. This is called osseointegration. This fusing is extremely important to the success of the implant. It can take from three to six months for this to happen. Once the fusion has taken place, the replacement tooth can be attached in one last office visit.
If you are missing one or more teeth, you are a candidate for dental implants. In the case that you have been missing a tooth for an extended period of time, there may be bone loss in the jaw. A bone graft can usually solve this problem and still allow you to have an implant placed.
The upfront cost of implants is slightly higher than alternative tooth replacement options such as bridges or dentures. However, dental implants can last a lifetime whereas the other options do not. Dentures and bridges need to be professionally maintained over their lifetime, so in the end, they can cost more than dental implants.
The actual cost of your dental implants will depend on many factors including the number of teeth that need to be replaced. If you have been missing teeth for an extended amount of time, a bone graft may be necessary. Consult your dentist to determine the cost of dental implants for your situation.
