The CEREC Crown Advantage
If a crown is needed, it normally would take two office visits to finally have the crown placed and the tooth restored. On the first visit the dentist would prepare the tooth and determine the crown needed. The crown would then be prepared off-site. At the second visit, it would then be placed and bonded to the prepared tooth. Because of new technology, a tooth can be prepared and crowned in one visit. The development of CEREC® crowns has made things quicker and simpler for patients and dentists while still offering a custom-made restoration for patients.
CEREC® crowns are created right in our South Weymouth, MA office while you wait. Dr. Burt first prepares the tooth for the crown by removing decay or damaged areas. Once the tooth is prepared, optical impressions will be taken of the tooth. There are no “goopy” trays needed to take an impressions. Instead, Dr. Burt will coat your tooth with a non-toxic, tasteless powder. A camera will take a digital picture of your tooth which is sent to the CEREC® machine. The machine’s 3D software converts the photo into a 3D model on the computer screen which Dr. Burt uses to design your restoration. He will then send the information to a milling machine in our office that creates the crown in 10-20 minutes. It is then polished and bonded to the prepared tooth. All of this is done in a single appointment!
A CEREC® crown is used for the same reasons any crown would be used. Cracked, broken, or decayed teeth are restored. CEREC® crowns also improve the cosmetic beauty of a patient’s smile. The benefits of this type of crown are:
- Developed and proven over two decades of clinical research
- Existing teeth are matched in color
- Materials used look like natural tooth enamel
- No messy impression trays needed because of digital imaging
- Strong, natural looking teeth
- Temporary crowns no longer needed
- Treatment completed in one visit
